Peterborough Cathedral was built in the shape of a cross. It was originally an abbey for the first 900 years and becoming a Cathedral in 1541. The Cathedral survived damage by Oliver Cromwell's troops during the Civil War and during World War 2 ARP Wardens on two occasions saved the historic building by dealing with firebombs. More recently the building was badly damaged by fire in November 2001. It is without doubt Peterborough's most famous and historic landmark. Worshippers enter by the West Porch. The Cathedral is dedicated to Sts Peter, Paul and Andrew. Statues of these three are at the top of the gables. The West Front was completed in the early 13th Century but the porch was added later.
